Terms of service
Lookback makes pictures, notes and short films that imagine a place at a moment in the past. These terms explain what you are getting, what it costs, and what we ask of you.
01The agreement
Lookback is operated by GAD Systems Inc, the owner of Lookback AI (“Lookback”, “we”, “us”). By creating an account or using the service you agree to these terms and to our privacy policy. If you do not agree, please do not use Lookback.
We may update these terms as the product changes. The date at the top tells you when they last changed; continuing to use Lookback after a change means you accept the new terms.
02What Lookback is, and is not
A look is an AI interpretation of a place at a chosen year and time of day: a picture, a short documentary note read from published reference sources, and details that point at objects in the picture. Films animate a look. Questions are answered from the same sources.
Every picture and film is a reconstruction, not a photograph, a record or evidence of anything. The note says which parts are documented and which are imagined, and it cites the sources it was read from. Sources are general reference works and can contain errors; we do not warrant that any look, note or answer is accurate or complete.
03Your account
You sign in with Google or an email code. Keep your sign-in method secure; you are responsible for what happens under your account. You must be at least 18 years old, or the age of majority where you live, to use Lookback.
One account is for one person. Do not share, sell or transfer accounts or credits.
04Credits and payments
- Lookback runs on prepaid credits. Every look and every film shows its price before you confirm it. Smaller actions, such as a question about a moment, use a small number of credits as well.
- New accounts receive 100 welcome credits. Welcome credits are promotional: they have no cash value, cannot be withdrawn, and may be withdrawn or expired by us.
- Purchased credits are paid for once, up front; there is no subscription. Payments are handled by a third-party payment processor, and your card details never reach our servers. Prices may change; the price shown when you buy is the price you pay, plus any tax that applies.
- Credits are not refundable except where the law requires it. If a look or film cannot be finished on our side, the credits it reserved come back to your balance automatically. Credits have no cash value and cannot be exchanged for money.
- A look costs 10 credits at the time of writing, and a film starts at 80; the current prices are always shown in the product.
05Your inputs, your outputs
The places, years, times of day and questions you enter are yours. We use them only to make what you asked for and to run the service.
You may use the pictures and films you make for personal and commercial purposes, as far as the law and our providers’ policies allow. You must not present them as authentic photographs, footage or historical records, and you must not remove context that says they are interpretations when you share them somewhere that could mislead people.
The showcase look shown to visitors, the product design and the software are ours. You may not copy or resell the service.
06Acceptable use
Do not use Lookback to make or spread content that is unlawful, harassing, hateful, sexual, or that depicts real people in a misleading way; to fabricate “evidence” of events; to infringe anyone’s rights; or to interfere with the service, its credits or other people’s accounts. Do not scrape Lookback or use it to build a competing dataset.
The providers that generate our pictures, notes and films apply their own safety rules, so some requests are refused; refused requests do not cost credits. We may decline, remove or limit content and accounts that break these terms.
07Services we depend on
Lookback is built on services we do not control: cloud hosting and storage, an authentication provider, a payment processor, the AI providers that generate pictures, notes, answers and films, mapping and place-search providers, and the published reference works the notes are read from. Their terms apply to their parts, and their availability affects ours. We choose them with care and hold them to written commitments on confidentiality and security.
08Availability and changes
We work to keep Lookback available and fast, but it is provided as is and may be interrupted, changed or discontinued. Generation can fail; when it does, the credits come back. We may add, change or remove features, prices and limits at any time.
09Ending things
You can stop using Lookback at any time and ask us to delete your account. We may suspend or close accounts that break these terms or that we reasonably believe are being misused; unused purchased credits are refunded in that case only where the law requires it.
10Liability
To the fullest extent the law allows, Lookback is provided without warranties of any kind, and GAD Systems Inc is not liable for indirect, incidental or consequential loss, or for loss of profits, data or goodwill, arising from your use of the service. Our total liability to you for any claim is limited to the amount you paid us in the twelve months before the claim. Nothing in these terms limits liability that cannot be limited by law.
11Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of the Province of British Columbia and the federal laws of Canada that apply in that province. The courts of British Columbia have exclusive jurisdiction over disputes, without affecting consumer rights you have where you live.
